Psalm 25:4-5
Show me Your ways, O LORD; teach me Your paths. Guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; all day long I wait for You.
There’s a quiet humility in these opening words of the psalm: “Show me your ways, O Lord,” the writer pleads—not from a place of spiritual pride, but from a recognition of how much we still have to learn (Psalm 25:4). Here, “the ways of the Lord” can mean both the great paths He Himself has walked—His mighty acts in creation, His thoughtful care throughout history, His wisdom and mercy in bringing about salvation across ages—and also the day-by-day roads He wants His people to walk, paths of obedience and worship we sometimes struggle to find on our own (Psalm 25:4-5).
We are asking to see, not only what God has done, but how we ought to live in response—wanting deeper understanding, and even more, the strength to walk closely with Him along those paths. The psalmist repeats himself, “teach me your paths.” It’s the same request in fresh words, revealing a longing for clarity and direction. He’s not content simply to know about God; he wants to travel the road with Him, step by careful step.
When he prays, “Lead me in your truth and teach me,” he’s asking that God’s Word—the steady and reliable Scriptures, the very truth Jesus speaks of (John 17:17)—would be his guide. He isn’t relying on his own wisdom or guesswork. Instead, he wants the Lord to shape both his beliefs and his everyday actions, letting God’s truth become the standard by which every decision is measured (Psalm 25:5).
Yet notice the gentle confidence at the heart of his prayer: “for you are the God of my salvation.” He trusts that God crafted his rescue long before he ever prayed, carrying it out perfectly through His Son, and applying it by His Spirit. This gives him courage to wait with hope—not resting in his own effort, but completely depending on the Lord’s faithfulness, confident that hope in God will never leave him disappointed (Psalm 25:5).
