Psalm 1:1

Psalm 1:1

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, or set foot on the path of sinners, or sit in the seat of mockers.

This psalm opens with an uplifting announcement—what happiness awaits the one who walks a different path from the world! The text calls him “blessed,” not just with passing joys but with steady, deep contentment, covering both the here and now and the life to come (Psalms 1:1). This is the kind of happiness that Christ also pointed to, promising true blessing for hearts tuned to God’s ways rather than the world’s applause (Matthew 5:3).

We see, first, what this blessed person does not do. He doesn’t follow the advice of those who leave God out of their plans or make evil seem wise. Though the ungodly may be clever in the world’s eyes, their hearts run restless, always searching and never finding true peace (Romans 4:5). The godly man hears many voices but chooses not to walk in the footprints of those leading away from the Lord. Like Joseph of Arimathea, he is willing to quietly disagree, even when surrounded by those who plot against what is good (Luke 23:51).

Next, the psalm urges us not to take our stand with those who openly embrace sin, making darkness their chosen home. This person may sometimes stumble, but he doesn’t stay in those patterns—he doesn’t “stand” or become comfortable where God’s ways are ignored (Romans 6:1).

Finally, the blessed man does not settle down with the scornful, whose words belittle and mock that which is holy, or who wear pride like armor (Proverbs 3:34). Instead, he quietly keeps his distance, preferring the company of those who prize humility and truth.

Take heart: being blessed is not about isolating yourself in pride, but about making gentle, steady choices to honor the Lord, even when the world goes the opposite direction. The one who seeks this path discovers a fullness of joy the world simply cannot duplicate.
