John 5:24
Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life.
When Jesus says, “Truly, truly, I say to you,” we hear both authority and compassion in His voice (John 5:24). This is not just any statement—it is the assured word of the One who is completely trustworthy and always keeps His promises. The words that follow are an invitation, not just to hear with our ears, but to receive with our hearts.
To hear Christ’s word, as He means it, is more than simply listening to another sermon or reading another verse. True hearing goes deeper: it means taking in the gospel message as the life-giving truth it is, letting it settle into our understanding, stirring us to love and respond. It means recognizing Jesus for who He really is, accepting His forgiveness, and resting our hope completely in what He accomplished for us (John 14:1). This hearing draws a sharp line between merely knowing about the truth and being changed by it from the inside out.
Notice, too, how Jesus speaks of believing in the One who sent Him—the Father. To trust Jesus is also to trust the Father who sent Him on our behalf. Their unity means that faith in Christ is faith in the heart of God Himself (John 14:1). Anyone who hears and believes has already stepped into something extraordinary: eternal life. This isn’t some distant prize to be waited for, but a gift already granted, rooted in God’s unbreakable promise. The Holy Spirit begins to transform and prepare us for that life even now (Ephesians 1:13-14).
Here’s the comfort: those joined to Christ by faith will never face condemnation. Even though each one of us deserves judgment, Jesus’ sacrifice secures our freedom. We cross over from spiritual death to real, lasting life—from guilt to peace, from fear to hope. In Christ, you are safe now and forever; His word guarantees it (Romans 8:1). Whatever your past or struggles, your future is now bound up with His life. Take heart—Christ turns death into life, and doubt into the security of His love.
