If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not bridle his tongue, he deceives his heart and his religion is worthless.

Let’s picture a person who seems so devoted—always present at worship, ready with a prayer or a wise-sounding word. But there’s a warning here: “If anyone thinks himself to be religious, yet does not bridle his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is worthless” (James 1:26). God is showing us that talk can be cheap when it is not matched by the gentle discipline of how we speak about and to others.

It’s easy to slip into boasting about spiritual accomplishments, or to speak poorly of others, letting criticism, gossip, or harshness escape unchecked. When someone’s words injure and divide, all their devotion—no matter how impressive it appears on the outside—is empty and unprofitable in God’s sight. The psalmist, too, prayed for his mouth to be kept from sin so that his life would truly honor God (Psalm 39:1).

True faith reshapes our hearts and flows out into our words. The way we speak should show care, humility, and love, guarding the honor of others and pointing to the kindness of Christ. Unchecked words only reveal a self-deception—a false confidence that religious acts alone can make up for a careless tongue.

So, take encouragement in this practical test: let your words be marked by self-control, graciousness, and blessing. When you bridle your tongue out of love for God and neighbor, your life points truly to Him, and your faith bears fruit that lasts.
