“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord.

When we hear God declare, “My thoughts are not your thoughts,” He’s gently reminding us of a divide we so often forget—that His way of seeing and understanding the world is far higher and deeper than ours could ever be (Isaiah 55:8). While both God and people have thoughts and purposes, ours are set within boundaries, limited by time, and so often shadowed by selfishness or error. God’s thoughts, though, are endless—always pure, always wise, with no beginning or end, reflecting His holy nature and loving intentions toward His people (Psalm 33:11).

When it comes to the matters closest to our hearts—like forgiveness and salvation—we often get things upside down. Many imagine that God forgives only the “less serious” offenses, or that we can earn His favor by our own moral efforts, rituals, or heritage (Romans 10:3). But God’s mercy isn’t based on our performance or good intentions; it comes to us through Christ alone, and it comes freely, deeply, without reluctance or grudging reservation (Micah 7:18–19).

This is why we are called to leave behind our own thoughts—especially those that imagine mercy is either impossible or automatic, or that overlook the way sin truly separates us from God (Isaiah 55:7). God’s “ways,” the paths He sets out for us, are straight and clear—marked by light rather than darkness, truth rather than confusion, and leading ultimately to life, not death (Proverbs 14:12). His forgiveness is full, not halfhearted; He not only forgives, but also forgets, wiping the slate entirely clean for all who turn to Him (Hebrews 8:12).

So take heart: God’s ways are not only higher—they are kinder, wiser, and more generous than anything we could invent. When you come to Him, however heavy your failings or doubts may be, you’re met by a mercy and understanding far greater than our own. Walk in His ways and trust His heart, for His pardon is abundant and His love never fails (Lamentations 3:22–23).
