Hebrews 11:1

Hebrews 11:1

Now faith is the assurance of what we hope for and the certainty of what we do not see.

Faith, as described here, isn’t just wishful thinking or a good feeling about the future—it’s much stronger and deeper than that. The kind of faith this passage talks about is the same steady trust that kept the saints of old going, from Abraham all the way to the last prophet. It is rooted not in ourselves or general optimism, but in God’s proven faithfulness, love, and power through Christ (Hebrews 10:38Galatians 2:20). This faith is not just outward show or mental agreement—it involves clinging to every promise God gives, whether about salvation, resurrection, or the hope of being with Him in eternity (Romans 4:211 Peter 1:3-5).

When Scripture calls faith the “substance of things hoped for,” it means that faith gives a weight and reality to the promises we haven’t yet seen fulfilled (Hebrews 11:1). Think of faith as a foundation: much like a builder trusts the ground beneath before ever seeing the finished house, a believer rests on God’s promises, confident that they will come to pass—even if the full picture is still hidden from our eyes (Psalm 27:13). In this way, faith becomes a quiet but confident assurance, giving us a foretaste and certainty of future blessing.

Faith also acts as the “evidence of things not seen.” It reaches back and draws certainty from God’s work in creation, the cross, Christ’s resurrection, and His ongoing care for us (Hebrews 11:3Romans 1:20). While we may not see heaven yet, or Christ seated at the right hand of the Father, faith persuades us of these unseen realities as powerfully as sight itself does (John 6:47).

Take heart—faith is not a weak substitute for seeing, nor a last resort for the desperate. It is God’s gift to His children, allowing us to stand firm today, certain of all that He holds for us tomorrow. So, as you wait for God’s promises, let your heart be anchored by the substance and assurance that only true faith can give.
