Genesis 1:2

Genesis 1:2

Now the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

In the beginning, the earth was a shapeless, empty place—a swirling mass of unformed matter, formless and void (Genesis 1:2). Nothing yet looked as we know it now. The land and oceans were not separated; there were no plants or animals, no bustling life, only a vast, featureless mixture. Throughout history, people in different lands have pictured these early moments as a kind of chaos—a muddled starting point, with everything mixed together before God began to shape it.

Even before anything was alive or structured, darkness covered the surface of this deep, watery expanse (Genesis 1:2). All creation was silent and still, hidden under the blanket of darkness. Nothing was clear or ordered yet. Some ancient thinkers speculated that water was the very foundation of everything, but Scripture goes higher: it tells us that God’s Spirit Himself was present, hovering over the waters (Genesis 1:2). Like a mother bird gently brooding over her nest, the Holy Spirit moved with purpose and care, preparing the world for God’s creative word to bring light, order, and life (Job 26:13).

This powerful image corrects any notion that our world was the result of accident or blind forces. Instead, God’s Spirit was intimately at work from the very first moment, actively involved in forming the heavens and the earth (Psalm 104:30). There is nothing random about your origin or the world around you; our orderly universe comes from a wise and loving Creator who moves with mercy and intentionality.

Let it comfort you—no matter how formless or empty some seasons of your life may feel, God’s Spirit has not left. He brings structure to confusion and light to darkness. As He shaped the beginnings of the world, so He can bring beauty and purpose to the most chaotic places in your story (2 Corinthians 4:6).
