Colossians 3:12
Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
Imagine a wardrobe filled not with clothes, but with character traits—qualities as visible and inviting as a favorite coat. Here the apostle encourages believers, since they’ve “put off” the old self, to now “put on” Christ’s virtues as a new and fitting wardrobe (Colossians 3:9-10). These qualities are not what earn our place with God, but they do display the beauty of salvation and make the gospel attractive to those who interact with us. Without them, our profession of faith can seem empty—like someone venturing outside without their proper clothes (Colossians 3:12).
These instructions are grounded in who we are: chosen by God, set apart for His purposes, and dearly loved (Ephesians 1:4-5; Colossians 3:12). Being “holy” and “beloved” isn’t something we accomplished by our own goodness, but something God graciously accomplished for us—in Christ’s work and by His Spirit’s renewal within. That’s why, out of thankfulness and new identity, we practice mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Good works are what we were created to walk in, showing the world God’s heart of mercy (Ephesians 2:10).
Among these virtues, “bowels of mercies” or deep compassion comes first. This means letting God grow in us a sincere and patient sympathy for others’ hurts and struggles—feeling with them and acting to help (Romans 12:15). Kindness is compassion in motion, reaching out in practical, cheerful ways, especially to those in God’s family. Humility allows us to see ourselves honestly—as needful, not superior, always more blessed than we deserve (Philippians 2:3; 1 Peter 5:5). Meekness and patience round out this godly attire: enduring hardship quietly; responding to wrong without resentment, just as our Savior did (1 Peter 3:4; Colossians 3:13).
Let’s remember, these qualities aren’t a burden, but a blessing. In putting on Christ day by day, we display His love and point others to the One who first loved us.
