Proverbs-3-27

Proverbs 3:27

Do not withhold good from the deserving when it is within your power to act.

Picture a world where everyone—regardless of status, strength, or wealth—looks after each other, not simply because it’s noble, but because it’s what’s right and just in God’s eyes. The biblical call to “withhold not good from those to whom it is due” (Proverbs 3:27) isn’t just talking about giving what’s left over, but honoring what others are rightly owed—whether it’s respect for those in authority (Romans 13:7), honest payment to those we owe, or showing mercy to the poor when their need comes knocking.

The wisdom here dives deep. The ancient translators saw this as a clear command: Don’t shy away from helping those in need. In fact, God’s design is that some resources—whether financial, emotional, or spiritual—are entrusted to us for the good of others. Riches aren’t ultimately our own; we’re simply God’s caretakers, called to steward what He’s provided by sharing generously, especially with our brothers and sisters in faith (Galatians 6:10).

But it isn’t just about physical generosity. Sometimes, the “good” you owe is a word of encouragement, a listening ear, or godly counsel offered in love (Matthew 6:1). Every act—material or spiritual—carried out when you have the ability and opportunity becomes an act of righteousness. Even Jesus warned that hoarding what belongs to the needy turns wealth into “unrighteous mammon” (Luke 16:9), a kind of treasure that wastes away when withheld from its true purpose.

So, when the opportunity arises to lend a helping hand, don’t hesitate or delay. When it’s within your reach to do good, whether simple kindness or sacrificial giving, let your actions reflect not just kindness, but the holy trust God has placed in you as His steward. There’s comfort and quiet joy in knowing that as you give, you mirror God’s generous heart—and that your faith finds real expression in humble, daily acts of love.
