Psalm 1:5
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
When the day of God’s judgment arrives, those who have turned away from Him and chosen evil will not be able to stand confidently before Him (Psalm 1:5). Just as straw or thorns can’t withstand a raging fire, those who resist God will be shaken and unable to remain upright when He sets things right (Malachi 4:1). Whether we think of the judgments that sometimes fall during our lifetime or the final day when Christ judges everyone (2 Corinthians 5:10), the outcome for the ungodly is the same: they won’t endure, and their case will not be acquitted. They will not be placed among the redeemed, but separated—as Christ described when He divides the sheep from the goats (Matthew 25:30).
Some have argued that the wicked won’t rise at all, but Scripture clearly teaches the reality of resurrection for all—those who have done good and those who have not (John 5:28-29; Ecclesiastes 12:7). God’s justice is complete; the resurrection makes certain that body and soul answer together for how life was lived. For those outside of Christ, resurrection means facing judgment, not being counted among those welcomed into eternal joy (Romans 6:16).
In that day, there will be no confusion or mingling among the congregation of the righteous. Now, it can be hard to tell who truly belongs to Christ—there are both wheat and tares in the field (Matthew 13:38-43). But at the last, God will perfectly purify His people. All who are covered by Christ’s righteousness and changed by His grace will be gathered into His presence, never again to be mixed with sin or sorrow.
Take heart: if your trust is in Jesus, your place in His redeemed family is secure. One day Christ Himself will gather every believer, free from sin and all shame, to stand forever in joy and fellowship.
