Hebrews 13:17

Hebrews 13:17

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch over your souls as those who must give an account. To this end, allow them to lead with joy and not with grief, for that would be of no advantage to you.

Take to heart the gentle invitation found here: “Obey your leaders and submit to them” (Hebrews 13:17). This isn’t a call for unquestioning loyalty or blind obedience, but a loving reminder to listen well and respond faithfully to those God has entrusted with shepherding your soul. These spiritual leaders—pastors and elders—watch over you not for their own gain, but because they are charged with your spiritual good. Like watchful shepherds or caring parents, their deepest desire is to see you flourish in Christ.

When you receive the teaching, guidance, and even the sometimes uncomfortable correction your leaders offer, you honor not just them, but the God who placed them in this role. God’s design is that the church, as a spiritual family, would grow together through loving direction, encouragement, and sometimes gentle discipline (1 Thessalonians 5:12–13). Such mutual respect brings blessing: your leaders can serve you with joy rather than grief, rejoicing as you grow in faith, hope, and love.

But if we resist or disregard their care, we bring sorrow not only to those who lead, but also to ourselves. When spiritual leaders find their work weighed down by constant worry or discouragement, the whole body feels it. Consider how your openness, encouragement, and willingness to follow biblical counsel can lighten their hearts—and how, on the day when all must give account, their testimony about your life may be one of glad thanksgiving (Acts 20:282 Timothy 4:2).

So let your heart be teachable, your presence encouraging, and your prayers steady for those who lead. In doing so, you help create a church family marked by joy, unity, and spiritual advantage for all.
