We all like sheep have gone astray, each one has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid upon Him the iniquity of us all.

We’re drawn a quiet picture here, one that invites us to honesty about our hearts: “All we like sheep have gone astray” (Isaiah 53:6). The prophet shows us, not our wisdom or purity, but our tendency to wander—just like sheep who, left alone, lose their way and drift from the good fields prepared for them. Sheep are not strong, clever, or resourceful. They get lost, tangled, and can’t find home again unless a shepherd comes to rescue them. So it is with every person, Jew and Gentile alike, even those chosen by God Himself; we chase after our own paths and cannot find our way back under our own power (1 Peter 2:25).

Each one of us, the passage says, has gone off “to his own way”—and that personal path always seems promising at first glance. We might call it our career, our pursuits, our favorite pleasures, or even our secret sins. Like trails in a dark forest, these roads pull us in with the illusion of freedom or happiness, but end up leading to heartache, emptiness, and ruin (Proverbs 14:12). No matter how confident we seem about our choices, in truth, our hearts turn away from God without even realizing it, and we never muster the strength to return on our own.

But here comes the extraordinary kindness of God: “The Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” The Judge we offended is the Father who provided a Redeemer. Our guilt—all of it, every burden we ever carried or tried to hide—was collected and placed on Christ as He gave Himself for us. Our sins, coming from every direction and age, met together on Him at the cross, making a weight only the Son of God could carry (2 Corinthians 5:21). What we could never undo or fix, He bore away once and for all.

So let your heart rest tonight in this simple promise: however far you may feel you’ve wandered, Christ’s rescue reaches farther. The Shepherd’s love is stronger than all our straying, and His grace brings us, safe and whole, back into God’s fold.
