Psalm 37:25
I once was young and now am old, yet never have I seen the righteous abandoned or their children begging for bread.
There’s a special weight and warmth in the psalmist’s words as he reflects on a life lived from youth to old age (Psalm 37:25). With years comes perspective, and the psalmist invites us to listen closely—not to a theory, but to the lessons learned from long observation and steady experience. Life has held its share of difficulty, and he’s watched closely, through both the sunlit days and the storms.
Through all his years, the psalmist insists he’s never witnessed God permanently abandon those who live rightly before Him (Psalm 37:25). Even when hard times have come and others have turned away, the Lord’s care remains sure. Sometimes the righteous do feel alone, and at moments it may appear—both to themselves and onlookers—that God has stepped away (Isaiah 49:14, Isaiah 54:7). But God’s absence is never for good; His promises hold fast, and even in hardship, His presence and provision break through in unexpected ways.
He also points out that although poverty and hardship can and sometimes do visit the children of godly people, he has seldom seen their descendants left in shame or the kind of need that strips all hope (Psalm 37:26, Isaiah 41:17). The righteous may knock on doors like David or Elijah in old stories, but even then, God finds ways to provide—sometimes through the compassion of others, sometimes through more surprising means (1 Kings 17:10-16). Such need is never a sign that God has abandoned them.
Take comfort: being “forsaken” is never the final word for those who walk with the Lord. If you feel worn or worried, trust that God’s eyes are still on you and your family. He is the Giver who provides what sustains, teaching us to depend on Him and not lose heart.
