Psalm 121:8
The Lord will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore.
These words remind us that God’s watchful care is not limited to just the spiritual corners of our lives, but reaches into every ordinary moment (Psalm 121:8). Whether we’re heading out the door to face the challenges of our daily responsibilities or coming home again, worn out and in need of comfort, the Lord promises to shield and guide us. Just as a faithful parent watches their child come and go, so God’s loving eye never leaves us—He is attentive in both the busyness of the world and in moments of quiet retreat (Deuteronomy 28:6).
In Scripture, those who “come in and go out” with the Lord’s blessing are people through whom God brings good wherever they walk. Think of Jacob, who saw his household flourish not through luck, but because God’s favor rested on him during his years of work and travel (Genesis 30:30). Or Joseph, whose footsteps were marked by God’s prosperity even in difficult circumstances, and everyone around him was touched by that grace (Genesis 39:5). There’s an old saying that such people walk with a “good foot”—wherever they show up, things are better, neighbors feel the hope that comes with them, and daily tasks are made lighter by God’s blessing alongside them (Psalm 1:3).
Some old teachers also saw a hint of something more eternal in these words: every step we take in this world prepares us for the journey into God’s forever home. The Lord guards us not just today, but for all time—protecting us in our daily work, holding us steady through every passage, and then opening the door to life everlasting, free from all harm and distress (Luke 16:26).
Take courage, then, as you go about your day. You are never out of God’s sight or care, whether in the simplest duties or the hardest trials. Entrust your every going out and coming in to Him, for His keeping is both for now and forever.
