John 13:34

John 13:34

A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also must love one another.

As Jesus prepared to leave His disciples, He gathered them close, much like a loving parent would when giving final instructions before a long goodbye. In those tender moments, He offered them not just comfort but a new command—a guiding principle to hold them together (John 13:34). He told them simply and clearly: love one another.

This isn’t just any sort of love. Jesus calls us to love each other as family—brothers and sisters, all children in God’s household. That means sticking together, praying for one another, helping carry each other’s burdens, forgiving when wronged, and gently encouraging each other to grow in faith and godliness (Galatians 6:2; Colossians 3:13; Romans 15:2). In calling it “new,” Jesus wasn’t saying the command itself was unknown—God’s people have always been told to love (Leviticus 19:18). But now He explains it more fully, reveals its true reach, and gives it a new depth and a fresh example: “As I have loved you.”

The old way simply said, “love your neighbor as yourself.” That is good. But Jesus widens the circle—no longer just those like us or close by, but anyone whom God brings into our path (Romans 13:8). And the measure of our love is no longer just “as you love yourself,” but as Christ has loved us—patiently, freely, going the extra mile, even when we’ve failed Him (John 15:12).

Here is comfort and challenge, all in one. There’s no need to wait until we feel worthy or others seem worthy. Jesus loved us despite our faults, and asks for the same mercy among His people (Romans 5:8). Whether among close friends or distant strangers in the faith, whether they are strong or weak, wealthy or poor, let us love, not just in words, but in real, practical ways—a helping hand, a kind word, a forgiving heart (1 John 3:18; 1 Peter 1:22). In this love, we honor His memory, and we walk in His footsteps.
