Hebrews 4:16

Hebrews 4:16

Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Picture a great throne—not cold, distant, or guarded, but full of welcome and wrapped in kindness. That is what this passage calls “the throne of grace” (Hebrews 4:16). We are invited to come near, not tiptoe, but step forward boldly, because our High Priest, Jesus, sits there ready to receive us, to listen, and to answer when we call. He beckons us not as strangers, but as dearly loved children, as family, offering forgiveness, cleansing, and all we need for life and godliness (Ephesians 1:72 Peter 1:3).

To come “boldly” certainly isn’t to barge in carelessly—it is to approach, heart open, knowing our acceptance rests not on our merit but on Christ’s finished work (Hebrews 10:19–22). God sits on a throne of majesty, so we come with awe, yet because He’s also the fountain of mercy, we come with assurance that His arms are open. Prayer is our pathway, and faith is the hand that knocks—He delights when we speak honestly and simply, trusting He hears and welcomes us.

Sometimes we imagine God’s throne as a seat of judgment, but Scripture here paints a different picture: it is a throne that gives grace to those in need, a mercy seat where burdens may be laid down (Exodus 25:21–22). Whether our trouble springs from outside hardships or inner struggles, help is always timely and abundant, tailored to our weakness—because Jesus Himself knows what real distress is (Hebrews 4:15).

So take heart: every prayer whispered in need finds a gracious ear. The throne of grace, built on Christ’s sacrifice, offers both mercy for every failure and strength for every trial. You can come not as a servant cowering before a master, but as a beloved child who knows the Father is both holy and tender—ready to give just what you need, just when you need it most.
