Ephesians 5:1-2
Be imitators of God, therefore, as beloved children, and walk in love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant sacrificial offering to God.
Imagine a child, loved and cherished by their parent, eagerly watching and copying their every move—not out of duty, but because of delight in belonging. This is the picture painted for us when we are encouraged to imitate God, not in His limitless power, but in His goodness, mercy, and forgiveness (Ephesians 5:1). We are invited to mirror His heart, especially in how we treat others—showing kindness, offering forgiveness, and sharing generously with those in need, just as He has done for us (Matthew 5:48). Our motivation springs from the deep reality that we are God’s beloved children—chosen, adopted, and treasured by His unshakable love from the very beginning (Romans 8:15; Ephesians 1:5).

Walking in love is the life that flows from knowing this love. We are called to love God—not just because it’s commanded, but because His goodness compels us, drawing us into a life eager to please Him and honor His name (Deuteronomy 6:5). Our love for Christ, too, isn’t meant to be cold or distant, but rich and real—expressed by treasuring His word, cherishing His nearness, and yearning for His presence (John 14:23). Most of all, this love overflows toward one another; it’s more than talk—it’s how we treat those around us, steadily giving and growing in affection and service (John 13:34-35).
Our example is Christ Himself—His love is unmatched and freely poured out for us, not because we earned it, but simply because He chose to love us (Romans 5:8). He didn’t hold back; He gave everything—His life, His comfort, and even His very self—to bring us back to God (Ephesians 5:2). His sacrifice was the perfect offering: fully sufficient, freely given, and fragrant in God’s sight—a gift that makes us whole and cherished forever (Genesis 8:20-21).
Let your days be shaped by this love. As dearly loved children, let’s step forward with hearts confident in who we belong to—ready to forgive, to give, and to love as He has loved us.
