John 13:35
By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.”
There is a unique sign, Jesus says, that will mark out His followers for all to see—not just for Christians to recognize each other, or to test the true work of grace in our own hearts, but for everyone watching from the outside world. People everywhere will know we belong to Him if we show real love toward one another (John 13:35).

Think back on those early centuries, when even those who didn’t share the faith, people who lived far from the teachings of Christ, would marvel at the way Christians treated each other. The pagans themselves would point and say, “See how they love one another!” If only such warmth were as obvious today. The world is quick to recognize forms of spirituality that are merely on the surface—what people wear, how strict they seem, or impressive displays of knowledge or giftedness. But Jesus draws our attention somewhere higher and deeper than outward marks: it is love, family-like affection among believers, that truly sets His disciples apart (1 John 3:14).
It’s not the badges and labels, nor remarkable abilities, that reveal Christ’s work in us. Many gifted people have missed the heart of Jesus. But when others see us go out of our way for each other—bearing burdens, forgiving faults, offering help—then even hardened skeptics can sense there’s something different at work (Colossians 3:13-14).
So today, let’s lean into that calling. Let our words and actions back up our faith with practical love. Often, the small kindness unnoticed by the world is noticed by our Savior. This kind of love makes the family of Christ visible, warm, and real—the clearest mark that we truly belong to Him (Romans 12:10).
