1 Corinthians 6:19
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
It’s a striking truth Paul shares with the church in Corinth—your very body is a temple, a sacred place where God’s Spirit chooses to dwell (1 Corinthians 6:19). What was taught earlier about God’s people all together is now brought close and personal: our bodies, not just the whole church, are chosen homes for the Holy Spirit’s presence and power (1 Corinthians 3:16). When God’s Spirit awakens faith in us, He takes up every part of us—soul and body—as His own living temple. Just as the ancient tabernacle was carefully set apart for God’s presence, so too are you set apart.
This changes how we think about everyday life. Imagine lending your home out to a close friend; you’d want it to be clean and welcoming. How much more, then, should we treat our bodies with respect, knowing they’re the dwelling of God Himself? To misuse our bodies—especially by sexual sin—is not just breaking a rule, but dishonoring the very place God has lovingly claimed for Himself (1 Thessalonians 4:3-4). The Spirit isn’t a visitor who comes and goes; He is a gracious gift meant to work in us, shaping holiness, planting every good grace, and preparing us to share in God’s inheritance (Ephesians 1:13-14).
Remember, you are not the sole master of your life or body anymore. In a world that preaches self-ownership, Scripture gently corrects us: we belong to God in body and soul (Romans 14:7-8). We are His, not only because He made us, but because Jesus has paid for us with His own life. That is a freedom that doesn’t lead to careless living, but to rich purpose and dignity.
So, let these words be a comfort and a call. You are dearly loved, beautifully redeemed, and wonderfully inhabited by God’s Spirit. Let each day reflect that belonging—living with hope, honor, and quiet joy in the knowledge that you are His temple.
