1 John 4:7
Beloved, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.
John urges us to make loving one another our regular practice—not out of mere duty, but because it is at the very heart of what it means to follow Jesus (1 John 4:7). After speaking firmly about discerning truth from error, he calls God’s family back to its clearest signpost: a steady, genuine love for each other. While the world may chase after convincing voices and appealing personalities, God’s people are marked out by how they hold fast to the truth—and, just as vividly, by how they stick together in humble, caring love.
This love isn’t just a good idea; it flows directly from the character and command of God. Loving others isn’t something we must muster up in our own strength. It comes as a gift—God’s own life shared with us by His Spirit (Galatians 5:22). When believers show selfless care for one another, it reveals that something new has happened in their hearts. This love is evidence of true spiritual birth—it springs up in those who belong to God, confirming their new identity as His children (1 John 3:14).
To love others in Christ’s family means you have come to know Him, not only as an idea, but personally—by tasting His grace and learning His ways. You begin to see believers with new eyes: as people shaped by God’s own image, precious because He loves them (1 John 4:8). Love, then, becomes the distinguishing mark of God’s children, because it is both His command and His gift—something He works out in us for the good of the whole family.
Take heart and remember: every act of genuine love—no matter how small—is evidence that God is at work in you. As you love others, you reflect your Father, and you make His presence more visible in this world.
