1 Corinthians 15:3
For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
When Paul first spoke to the believers in Corinth, he made sure to highlight what matters most—the simple, beautiful truth of Christ crucified. He placed this message at the very center, not only as the foundation of Christian hope, but also as the earliest and most important part of his teaching (1 Corinthians 15:3). Before any debates, advice, or correction, he wanted them anchored in this: Jesus died for our sins, just as the Scriptures had long foretold (Isaiah 53:5; Psalm 22:16; Daniel 9:26).
Paul’s message wasn’t something he made up or picked up second-hand. He received this truth from Christ Himself, and faithfully passed it along, as every faithful teacher should do, resisting the urge to add, subtract, or dress it up with personal opinions (Galatians 1:11-12). The heart of the gospel is not clever advice or useful rules, but the rescue accomplished by our Savior’s death—a rescue announced and written into every shadow, promise, and prophecy in the Old Testament (Genesis 3:15).
All along, the story of God’s people looked ahead to this event: every sacrifice, every poetic groan for deliverance, every word about a suffering servant was knit together in the person of Jesus. He suffered not for His own faults, but for ours, absorbing punishment, bearing blame, and making peace between us and God (Isaiah 53:6).
Let this truth settle your heart today. The cross is not only a fact of history, but the center of our hope. You are forgiven because Christ died, not because you’ve kept every rule or never failed. The message has not changed: what Scripture promised, Christ fulfilled, and the gospel still welcomes all who trust Him.
