1 Corinthians 13:6
Love takes no pleasure in evil, but rejoices in the truth.
Love never finds joy in what is wrong or unjust—either in its own failings or in the sins and struggles of others (1 Corinthians 13:6). Instead, love is grieved by its own shortcomings, the hidden faults of the heart, and even more so by the brokenness and wrongdoings in the world around it. Those who walk in Christ’s love mourn over sin rather than gloat or dismiss it, and cannot take delight when harm or injustice comes—even to someone counted as an enemy.
Think of Jesus’s response when Peter, trying to defend Him, lashed out and injured the high priest’s servant. Far from being pleased at Peter’s fierce loyalty, Jesus gently rebuked him and, in an act of pure compassion, healed the servant’s wound right there on the spot (Luke 22:50–51). That is the heart of true love: unwilling to celebrate another’s pain, quick to restore and heal.
Instead, love finds genuine joy in the truth—in the good news of Jesus, in honest living, and in every step others take toward what is upright and faithful (3 John 1:4). A heart shaped by grace treasures the gospel so much that it would never give it up, no matter the cost. It delights when life lines up with the truth of God—both in itself and those around it. Like a parent or faithful friend, true love is encouraged and refreshed when it sees others walking with integrity and following after Christ (Philippians 1:27).
If your heart aches at sin but lifts in the presence of truth, you are experiencing the very pulse of Christ’s own love. Let this serve as a gentle encouragement: keep longing for what is good, celebrating the victories of grace rather than fixating on the world’s brokenness, and always rejoice when God’s truth shines through.
