Romans 5:8
But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Let’s pause for a moment and marvel at the way God shines a light on His love for us. For many, God’s care can seem like a vague idea, hidden in mystery or lost in life’s noise. But here, God puts His love on display—not just in words, but in a living, breathing act that silences every doubt: Christ gave Himself for us while we were still caught in our sin (Romans 5:8).
Before any of us ever cleaned up our lives or felt even a stir of affection for God, His compassion reached out toward us. We were knee‑deep in rebellion, bound up in habits and attitudes we couldn’t break, running away rather than coming close. Yet, it’s exactly in this lost condition that Christ came and laid down His life—taking on the guilt and stain of our worst moments (Ephesians 2:4–5, Titus 3:3–5).
Maybe you wonder, “But what about now—when I still stumble and fall short?” Well, the truth is, even after we believe, the grip of old temptations sometimes tugs at us. Yet sin no longer rules over us; God has given us a fresh, clean standing in Christ. Our truest identity is no longer “sinner,” but “forgiven” and “renewed” (Romans 6:14, 2 Corinthians 5:17). God’s affection for us didn’t spring up after we started doing better or loving Him back—it began before the world began, born from His own deep, sovereign grace (Jeremiah 31:3, Ephesians 1:4–5).
So take courage. God’s love is not a response to your achievements or failures—it’s the starting point. He loved you first, loves you still, and delights to call you His own.
