Romans-3-10

Romans 3:10

As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one.

When the apostle Paul declares, “There is none righteous, no, not one,” he is not simply pointing out a Jewish problem or a Gentile failing—he is describing the universal condition of humankind (Romans 3:10). Drawing from the Psalms and prophets, Paul weaves together ancient words to make a clear and sobering point: left to ourselves, none of us measures up. Whether from religious heritage or moral striving, not one person stands perfectly innocent before God.

This isn’t just about visible mistakes or obvious failings. The Scriptures diagnose a deeper reality: our fundamental inability to meet God’s perfect and holy standard (Psalm 14:1-3). Even when we aim for good, our motives often waver; our best efforts fall short. It doesn’t matter how we compare with others or what reputation we might have—before the pure gaze of the Lord, every prideful thought, selfish impulse, and hidden fault is seen.

The idea isn’t to leave us hopeless or weighed down with guilt. Rather, Scripture steers us away from any confidence in our own goodness (Isaiah 64:6). No one—no matter how disciplined or devout—can claim innocence by their own obedience or virtue. Only those who are clothed in Christ’s perfect righteousness, freely given and received by faith, are declared righteous in God’s sight (Philippians 3:9).

If this truth feels humbling, let it also set you at ease. You are not expected to earn God’s approval through your works or to outshine your neighbor in piety. Christ Himself is your perfection, your way to forgiveness, and your hope for standing blameless before God (2 Corinthians 5:21). Anchor your heart in what He has done, and rest in the assurance that His righteousness is enough for every believer.
