Romans 3:23
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
When Paul writes, “all have sinned,” he is painting a sweeping portrait of humanity—one in which no one stands outside the frame (Romans 3:23). From the most respected religious leader to the person with the roughest past, all share the same fundamental reality: we have all both inherited and personally committed sin. No matter our background or attempts at goodness, this is a universal truth that levels us all, Jew and Gentile alike, the upright and the wayward—no distinction exists on this ground (Romans 3:9).
Because of this, every one of us has fallen short of the glory God intended for His creation (Romans 3:23). Once, we were made to reflect His goodness and beauty, to honor Him in our character and actions (Genesis 1:27; 1 Corinthians 11:7). Sin robbed us of that privilege. Now our best works can’t restore what was lost or give us any reason to boast before God. Even the kindest among us cannot claim that they have earned any special favor or glory by themselves (Ephesians 2:8-9).
But this hard truth has a bright side: recognizing our shared need opens the door to grace for everyone (Romans 5:17). God’s mercy does not depend on our pedigree or performance, but freely offers a goodness that is better than anything we could make ourselves. Maybe you feel far from God or especially weighed down by mistakes—know that this fact does not shut you out from His kindness. In Christ, there is more than enough forgiveness and hope for all who come, no matter how far they have fallen. Instead of despair, let your honest need drive you to the One who invites you to share in His glory by grace.
