Romans 16:17-18

Now I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who create divisions and obstacles that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Turn away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.

As Paul draws near the end of his letter, his tone grows even more gentle and earnest. Like a loving older brother, he pleads with the church to protect what is most precious—the truth of the gospel and the unity that springs from it (Romans 16:17). He doesn’t bark out orders; instead, he appeals to his readers’ hearts, calling them “brothers and sisters” and urging them to be alert. Paul knows that sometimes, danger slips in softly, wearing the mask of wisdom or kindness.

Paul instructs them—just as we are instructed today—to watch carefully for anyone sowing confusion by pushing ideas that don’t line up with what Jesus taught. Whether it’s demanding strict religious rules, adding burdens to faith, or dividing people into exclusive groups, such teaching pulls apart the very fabric Christ wove together through the gospel (1 Corinthians 1:10). The church is meant to be like a family table where all redeemed by Christ can sit side by side, united in Him. When that unity is threatened, the apostle warns, we’re not meant to ignore it, but to gently and firmly “mark” those trying to divide and distract, and—if they refuse correction—avoid their influence.

Such troublemakers do not serve Jesus, no matter how spiritual they sound. At heart, they’re often in it for personal gain or applause (Philippians 3:18-19), using clever words and flattery to win over sincere but unsuspecting believers. This is why discernment matters; even beautiful words can mislead. We are called, not to suspicion or harshness, but to wisely test everything by the clear teaching of Scripture (Acts 17:11), holding fast to what is true and graciously turning away from deception.

Take heart—Christ protects His church. As you care for one another and encourage faithful teaching, God will use your steadfastness to guard His people. His Spirit grants both unity and wisdom to those who humbly seek Him.
