Psalm 91:7

Psalm 91:7

Though a thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, no harm will come near you.

Picture yourself standing in a time when fear and sickness sweep through the land—when danger seems to lurk on every side. The psalmist paints a vivid scene: thousands fall on your left, ten thousand on your right, and yet, by God’s promise, the calamity does not come near you (Psalm 91:7). This isn’t just a tale for the battlefield, or a story of swords and arrows. Here, the threat is quieter and deadlier—the pestilence that breaks in unexpectedly, leaving families grieving and cities shaken (Psalm 91:6).

But even as devastation circles all around, God’s protecting care is like a strong, invisible wall for those who trust Him. The psalmist had witnessed this kind of mercy in his own life—when disease struck Israel and spared those whom God shielded. It was just as in Egypt long ago, when destruction passed by the doorways marked by faith (Exodus 12:23), or during David’s days when disaster came close, but the Lord held it back from the hearts and homes of His chosen (2 Samuel 24:16). Sometimes, God’s people still walk through suffering—even severe illness or sudden loss. Yet, when He allows it, it is never without a loving purpose (Romans 8:28). Whatever comes, no true harm can overtake those He calls His own (Isaiah 43:1-2).

There is one “plague” more fearful than any—sin that corrupts the heart. Even if our bodies should fall in a public sorrow, those who belong to Christ are in the safest hands of all, rescued forever from destruction and carried into peace (2 Timothy 4:18). So when distress comes near, remember that nothing touches you unless your Father allows it—and if He does, it is always to lead you to Himself.
