Psalm 91:13
You will tread on the lion and cobra; you will trample the young lion and serpent.
Picture the ancient wanderers in the wilderness—surrounded by wild animals and deadly snakes, yet wonderfully kept safe by God’s hand (Deuteronomy 8:15). This promise reaches back to those days: “You will tread upon the lion and the adder.” Time and again, God’s people have experienced such remarkable protection. Samson faced predators without fear, Daniel rested safe in a den of lions, and Christ Himself, alone in the wilderness among the wild beasts, walked in peace (Mark 1:13). The first followers of Jesus were given a similar promise—they would handle serpents and scorpions without injury, as Paul dramatically demonstrated when a snake tried to strike him (Acts 28:5).

But this picture means even more when we look beneath the surface. Throughout Scripture, the lion often symbolizes fierce attack and the serpent stands for cunning deception; together they point to our ancient enemy, Satan (1 Peter 5:8). When the psalm says, “the young lion and the dragon you will trample underfoot,” it reminds us that evil may seem powerful and clever, but it is ultimately defeated. At the cross, Jesus broke the devil’s grip and exposed his power as empty. He, the promised seed, crushed the serpent’s head just as God declared at the dawn of time (Genesis 3:15).
This is more than ancient history; it is a living assurance for everyone who trusts Jesus. Evil may growl and hiss at us, using both threat and subtle temptation, but it cannot destroy those who belong to Christ. One day soon, every dark force will be put firmly beneath the feet of God’s people, just as Christ has already conquered for us (Romans 16:20).
Take heart, then: you are not walking alone or unprotected. In the face of fearsome challenges or crafty lies, remember the promise—God shields His children and gives them victory, both now and forever. Rest secure in His care and courage.
