They will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

There is a beautiful promise tucked inside these words—the image of angels gently carrying God’s people in their hands (Psalm 91:12). It’s the picture of a parent, guiding a child across stony ground, making sure every step is safe. God calls His angels not just to watch from a distance, but to lean in close, tenderly upholding us. Like little children, we can be unsteady and easily bruised; yet, the Lord has assigned mighty helpers to guard us on our journey.

This care is not only a sign of angelic strength, but a window into God’s heart. The angels’ service shows both their humility and their patient commitment to the smallest needs of the saints (Hebrews 1:14). We are never out of their sight, and ultimately, never forgotten by God. When life is heavy and troubles seem too much, these servants are ready to carry us through, and at the end, to bring our souls safely to God’s presence—just as they did for Lazarus, who was carried to Abraham’s side (Luke 16:22).

“Lest you dash your foot against a stone” is a lovely, everyday way of reminding us that God’s watchfulness extends to the tiniest details (Proverbs 3:23). Sometimes the “stones” are outward troubles or dangers. Other times, as some have said, the real stumbling blocks are our own stubborn hearts or sinful desires (Ezekiel 36:26). Yet, the Lord’s promise stands: He guards us from lasting harm, even from ourselves.

Take heart, then—God’s care for you is stronger and nearer than you realize. His angels are close at hand, and as you walk forward in faith, you are surrounded by a love both mighty and gentle, one that will not let you stumble or be lost.
