Psalm 27:1
The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— whom shall I dread?
Picture the psalmist standing quietly in the darkness, yet there is no dread—because he knows where to look for light. When he says, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” it’s more than poetic feeling; it’s a bold confession rooted in a living relationship with the God who reveals Himself as both our radiant guide and our rescuer (Psalm 27:1). The ancient wisdom found here hints at Jesus Himself, the eternal Word who became our light—who not only gives understanding, but also kindles new life within us (John 1:4). This isn’t just the glow of human reason or a burst of good fortune. It’s the gracious light that comes from knowing Christ, the “sun of righteousness” who chases away the shadows (Malachi 4:2), and it’s this light that makes all the difference in fearful times.

From the first flicker of faith to every deepening joy, all our spiritual understanding and peace flow from Him. The psalmist enjoys the very warmth of God’s presence, and this nearness dissolves fear, no matter the threats that gather around. Those who walk in Christ’s light can face darkness without terror, because that darkness is temporary, but the radiance given by God is everlasting (Psalm 97:11). No evil, spiritual or earthly, can snuff out the hope that comes from belonging to Him.
Even more, the Lord is called “the strength of my life” (Psalm 27:1). This is not just for our bodies, but also for our souls. Jesus Himself is the source and sustainer of spiritual life—He is the bread we need for each new day and the very security of our hope (John 6:35). If He has given us eternal life, no enemy can steal it or derail our future (Colossians 3:3). Not sin, not Satan, not even death has the last word—they have all been conquered by our Saviour (Hebrews 2:14-15; 2 Timothy 1:10).
So take heart: you don’t need to be ruled by fear. Christ is your Light, your Salvation, and your Strength—yesterday, today, and forever.
