Proverbs 12:25
Anxiety weighs down the heart of a man, but a good word cheers it up.
There are seasons in life when the weight of worry settles deep, causing our hearts to bend under its load (Proverbs 12:25). Whether it’s anxiety about daily needs or the shadow of some hardship ahead, this heaviness quietly saps our joy and makes everything feel burdensome. Even the best of us can become bowed down, unable to find comfort in even the things we normally enjoy. Sometimes a single fearful thought or troubling word can fill our minds, multiplying our sense of fear.
Yet, there’s hope in the power of a “good word.” When someone speaks kindness or encouragement directly into the midst of our distress, it can lighten the load almost immediately. A gentle word from a caring friend, or assurance from Scripture, acts like a shaft of sunlight breaking through thick clouds (Isaiah 50:4). The message of the gospel itself—a promise of forgiveness, peace, and lasting hope through Christ—is the greatest “good word” of all, refreshment for the soul that is weary or bowed down (Romans 5:1; Isaiah 61:1).
If your spirit feels stooped today, remember that God provides comfort not just through dramatic miracles, but often through simple encouragement—words fitly spoken, the comfort of a friend, or a line of truth recalled. Cast your cares upon the Lord; He invites you to lay down every burden and be carried by His love (Psalms 55:22). And do not forget, a word of grace you might speak, however small, may be just what someone else needs to lift their heart again.
