Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.
Here we find a statement with remarkable confidence: “I can do all things…” (Philippians 4:13). But it’s important not to misunderstand what the writer means. He’s not claiming supernatural power or a limitless ability to do anything imaginable. Rather, he’s talking about the strength to remain faithful and to face whatever circumstances come his way—whether that means having much or having little, experiencing hardship or abundance. The real meaning is about the God-given ability to stand firm, no matter what life brings.
Consider the practical side: this strength covers all that God calls us to as believers. Whether caring for others, fulfilling our work with integrity, encouraging those around us, or enduring suffering for the sake of Christ—these are the “all things” in view here (Philippians 4:12). Paul did not rely on his own inner resources or willpower. In fact, he often speaks honestly about his own weakness and need, always pointing back to the source of his strength—not himself, but Christ living within him (2 Corinthians 12:9; Ephesians 6:10; 2 Timothy 2:1).
So, the encouragement for each of us is not to take this as a rallying cry for limitless achievement or self-made victory. Instead, let it quiet our striving. Whenever we face difficulties, temptations, or tasks that seem impossible, we are reminded: Christ Himself is the wellspring of our endurance and courage. Everything God calls us to—He supplies the strength to do. If you feel weak, you are precisely where God can best show His power through you.
