Leviticus 19:11

You must not steal. You must not lie or deceive one another.

Picture God’s people gathered on the edge of the promised land, preparing for a new season marked by both opportunity and challenge. In these simple words, “You must not steal—you must not deal falsely or lie to one another” (Leviticus 19:11), the Lord weaves together instructions that reach far beneath outward action, touching the quiet places of heart and conscience.

Some in ancient times wondered whether this warning was just about taking things that aren’t yours, or if it went even deeper. The old Jewish teachers noticed: it’s not only about money, but also about men’s lives and well-being (Exodus 20:15). It wasn’t just about a thief’s hand, but those silent witnesses who turned away from wrongdoing or quietly profited while others suffered loss (Proverbs 21:6). God’s vision is broader than mere property—it includes caring for the poor and honest deal-making, reminding us that neglect and hidden selfishness can steal just as surely as a hand in a purse (Leviticus 19:9-10).

It’s easy to think that “dealing falsely” is only a problem for merchants in the marketplace. But these words point to a deeper integrity—faithfulness in our promises and trustworthiness when handling what belongs to others (Leviticus 6:2-5). Failing to speak up about the truth, when it is in our power to do so, makes us part of the wrong. Even in daily conversation, God calls us away from little lies, half-truths, and unfair accusations (Ephesians 4:25).

In the end, God’s commands aren’t a narrow fence, but a wide path toward flourishing and trust in community. If you’re striving to live honestly, take heart: the Lord delights in those who walk uprightly and extends forgiveness and restoration when we stumble (1 John 1:9). His way is trustworthy and good—safe ground for all who would walk after Him.
