Joshua 1:9
Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
The charge here rings out like a steady hand on the shoulder in an anxious moment: “Have I not commanded you?” God’s reminder is simple but weighty. Joshua is not being asked to blaze his own trail; he is being sent, called by the same voice that once shaped the heavens. The mission—crossing the Jordan, leading God’s people, keeping the law—is not just Joshua’s idea or responsibility. These are God’s instructions, spoken with all the faithfulness and power of the “I AM” (Joshua 1:9).
Because the call comes from the Lord Himself, Joshua can draw real confidence—not from his own strength or experience, but from the One who made the promise and is more than able to fulfill it (Joshua 1:5). That’s why the repeated command, “Be strong and courageous,” shows up so often. God’s people so easily forget that the source of courage is God’s presence, not their own qualifications (Joshua 1:6; Joshua 1:7). The Lord’s encouragement doesn’t gloss over threats or inward fears. Whether enemies threaten or insecurity whispers, God tells Joshua not to let fear take root—not because danger isn’t real, but because God’s steadfast presence is even greater.
The final reassurance goes deeper than simple comfort: “The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). God Himself journeys alongside those He calls, not as a distant observer but an ever-present guide and help. For believers now, as then, it is enough. Whatever daunting path lies ahead, the promise remains: God’s Word and presence steady our trembling hearts, and He strengthens us for whatever comes, wherever He leads.
