John 15:13
Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.
On that unforgettable night before His death, Jesus looked at His followers and spoke of the greatest love a person can show—laying down your life for your friends (John 15:13). He was not painting some distant, unreachable ideal, but pointing to what He Himself was about to do. Love goes beyond kind words or thoughtful gifts; it is measured at its deepest when someone willingly gives up everything, even life itself, for the good of others. No deeper sacrifice exists among people.
Yet Jesus’ own act of love was in a league of its own. He gave up far more than earthly possessions—He surrendered His very life, that precious and matchless life, not just as a noble man but as God’s own Son (Philippians 2:6-8; 1 John 3:16). He didn’t have to do this—His life was never forfeit, and no one could take it from Him. He chose, freely and purposefully, to take our place, bearing our guilt and carrying the punishment our sins deserved (Isaiah 53:4-6; 1 Peter 3:18). We were not His friends then, but His enemies—estranged by sin and stubbornness, yet He loved us still.
Notice the difference between Christ’s love and human love: people might die for someone who has earned their affection, or for the sake of reputation and recognition. Jesus laid down His life for people who had offered Him only hostility, with no strings attached—not coerced, not chasing glory, but out of pure, redeeming love (Romans 5:7-8). He made us friends when we deserved to be called anything but.
So if you sometimes wonder whether God’s love is real or if you’re worthy of it, remember the cross. While we were still against Him, He was already working to make us His own. His sacrifice was not just a grand gesture for “good people” but a rescue for those who needed it most—including you.
