John 14:27

Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.

In this tender scene, Jesus is about to leave His disciples, and He knows their hearts are uneasy—much like children watching a beloved leader depart (John 14:27). With all the warmth of a friend making his final wishes known, He offers them His most precious gift: peace. This isn’t just any well-wishing farewell or a polite “peace be with you,” as might have been common in His culture. Instead, Christ grants a kind of peace deeper than custom or tradition could bestow; it is the very peace He Himself enjoys with the Father (John 16:33).

The peace Jesus gives is not something we achieve by effort or good behavior—it is a free and unbreakable gift (Ephesians 2:14). His death and resurrection secure it for us; it is built on the firm foundation of reconciliation with God. This is the good news His followers were sent to proclaim: that those burdened with guilt or fear can find refuge and rest in Christ’s finished work (Romans 5:1). The world offers a surface calm, subject to every change of fortune, but Christ’s peace steadies the soul in every storm (Philippians 4:7). It reaches not only the mind, but also heals the heart and soothes the conscience, teaching us that we are forever God’s beloved children (Colossians 3:15).

When Jesus says, “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid,” He isn’t scolding or shaming. He knows our fears are real—loss, uncertainty, persecution, change. Yet He reassures us: because He leaves us this peace, we are never truly alone or forsaken (Hebrews 13:5). His peace isn’t a fleeting moment, but a lasting presence, enduring through life’s hardest days.

No matter what lies ahead—sorrow, confusion, or even danger—remember whose gift you possess. Christ’s lasting peace belongs to all who trust Him. Rest in that promise, and let your heart be quieted by the reality that Christ Himself has willed you His unshakeable peace.
