John 1:14

John 1:14

The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

In just a few powerful words, the Gospel writer describes one of the most astonishing events in history: “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). Here, we are invited to stand in awe as the eternal Son—who has always existed with the Father—takes on a full and real humanity. Not for a moment does He set aside His divinity, nor does He become a mixture of the two natures; instead, the Son fully keeps His divine identity, while truly embracing everything it means to be human—body, soul, and even frailty, yet without sin (Hebrews 4:15). Christ is not a shadow or apparition, but shares in the reality of our experiences and struggles.

To say that He “tabernacled among us” points us back to the old tents in the wilderness where God’s presence would dwell among the Israelites (Exodus 25:8). The tabernacle wasn’t much to look at from the outside, but inside it glowed with the beauty of God’s holiness. In the same way, Jesus’ outward appearance was humble—He wore our humanity and quietly carried our burdens. Yet inside Him dwelled all the fullness of God, brimming with grace and truth, just as the old tabernacle housed the glory of God behind a simple curtain (Colossians 2:9).

Those who walked beside Jesus were witnesses to glimpses of divine glory. Sometimes it sparkled openly—like at the transfiguration, in His miracles, and in the resurrection (Matthew 17:2John 2:11). At other times it was wrapped in kindness, wisdom, forgiveness, and the steadiness of truth. The Son is not simply “like” God’s only Son; He is, in every sense, the one and only born from the Father, uniquely radiating God’s very nature (Hebrews 1:3).

If ever you feel far from God, remember that He came in person to dwell with us, full of the treasures we need most. In Christ, God’s glory has walked right into the everyday world so we might know Him—receiving grace upon grace and hope that will never fade.
