Isaiah 40:31

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait upon the Lord will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.

Waiting on the Lord is not a passive or empty thing; it’s much more like how children look to their parents for love, guidance, and daily bread, or how loyal servants look to a wise master for direction and care (Psalm 123:2). It is the expectant patience of those who trust God’s character—like clients seeking help from a strong and kind advocate, or even like beggars who wait at the door, sometimes turned away but always returning, holding out hope for kindness (Luke 18:1-8). To wait in this way means to know God’s goodness, to hold Him in reverence, to keep showing up—both with our words and our hearts—and to remain calm and steady even when answers seem delayed.

God sometimes chooses a season of hiddenness, and our task is to keep trusting Him, confident that at the right time, He will reveal Himself again—His presence is always worth the wait (Isaiah 64:4). This faithful patience is how we receive His promises, trusting, as those before Christ looked toward His first coming and we now look for His return and the hope of eternal glory (Hebrews 9:28). The strength that God supplies is not a one-time gift, but a continual renewal, giving us what we need to stand firm against temptation, endure trials, and keep going—whether flying above the storm, running with joy, or simply walking forward, step by patient step (2 Corinthians 4:16).

Some days we soar high, faith lifting us closer to Heaven as if on eagle’s wings, eyes fixed on Christ and all that is waiting beyond the veil (Isaiah 40:31). Other days, faith looks more like running—quick and eager, energized by the hope we have. And sometimes all we can do is walk, quietly, not fainting, but clinging to Christ’s strength when ours feels weak. Whether you are flying, running, or walking today, the promise is certain: God does not grow tired, and He will keep supplying mercy for the step you are on.
