Genesis 1:1

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Let’s pause and imagine the very first moment when time itself began—when God spoke the heavens and the earth into existence (Genesis 1:1). In these words, we’re invited to glimpse God’s matchless power and artistry. The “heavens” here likely point to all that stretches above—the visible sky and the vast expanse where the sun, moon, and stars would soon be placed. The “earth” speaks to the original, unshaped world, not yet divided into land and sea, a formless mass waiting for God’s hand to organize and fill it (Genesis 1:2). Angels, those spiritual witnesses to creation’s dawn, were there rejoicing as God laid earth’s foundations (Job 38:6–7).

Some may think creation means making something out of what was already there, but this passage shows us a deeper miracle. God didn’t need raw materials—He brought everything into being out of nothing, simply by His command (Hebrews 11:3). This creative act belongs to God alone; only He has the strength and wisdom to establish everything visible and invisible with such power.

When Scripture uses the word for God here—“Elohim”—the hint of plurality paired with a single verb gives a quiet echo of God’s triune nature (Psalms 33:6). The Father, Son, and Spirit each play a part in creation’s story (John 1:1–3). And above all, these opening words direct our worship to the One who made it all, reminding us that He alone is the rightful object of our praise (Proverbs 3:19).

Let this truth settle your heart: the world did not arise by chance or accident, but by the wisdom and purpose of the eternal God. Everything you see—and even what you cannot witness—reminds us of His power, His plan, and His faithful love from the very beginning.
