Ephesians 6:12
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Paul invites us to see our daily battles in a much bigger light than we’d expect. We aren’t just pushing against hard circumstances or difficult people—our real struggle is much deeper and more unseen. “We do not wrestle against flesh and blood” (Ephesians 6:12). It’s easy to think that the obstacle or frustration in front of us is our main enemy, but Scripture opens our eyes to a hidden conflict—one fought not just with people, but against the dark spiritual forces that oppose God’s people.
Think of those ancient wrestling matches from the Olympic games, where opponents used strength and strategy to pin each other down. Paul borrows that image, not to describe a contest just between people, but a spiritual contest of much greater consequence. Yes, believers sometimes face resistance from people—whether through mockery, the spread of harmful ideas, or persecution. Christians are called to stand firm, bear up under wrong, and hold fast to Christ when challenged (Matthew 16:17), using truth to refute error and clinging to faith that overcomes the world’s hostility (1 John 5:4).
Yet, the struggle goes deeper still. Our true opponents are “the rulers, the authorities, the powers of this dark world, and the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12). The Bible describes these as dark beings, led by the devil, who exercise influence in the world and stand ready to oppose Christ’s work (John 12:31). These invisible enemies stand behind many of the world’s troubles, stirring up confusion, lies, and harm wherever they can.
Knowing this shouldn’t make us fearful or suspicious, but alert and mindful. In Christ, we’re not left defenseless—He’s provided everything we need: His armor of truth, faith, and righteousness (Ephesians 6:13). So, rest assured: as you stand firm in Him, every spiritual scheme can be met with the strength God supplies. You’re not alone in this wrestling match—the Lord Himself stands by your side.
