Acts 20:28

Acts 20:28

Keep watch over yourselves and the entire flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which He purchased with His own blood.

Take a careful look at your own heart and life, especially if God has entrusted you with any measure of spiritual care—whether over a congregation, a family, or simply the influence you have in your daily circles (Acts 20:28). The warning here isn’t just for your health or daily needs, though those matter. It’s a call to examine how you handle your gifts, your time, and even your attitude—making sure nothing drifts from Christ’s example, and that what you teach lines up with God’s Word, untwisted and whole.

There is solemn responsibility in looking after God’s people. They are pictured as sheep—sometimes weak or wandering, sometimes bruised or weary, but always deeply loved by the Shepherd (Psalm 100:31 Peter 5:2). This flock isn’t just a crowd; each person matters—the strong and the fragile, the searching and the settled. God calls those who lead to care for all: to feed, protect, and tend by patiently speaking truth and gently mending hearts. Whether visible leaders or unseen encouragers, we’re urged to imitate Christ, the Great Shepherd, who knows every sheep by name.

And what makes this flock so precious? It was bought at the greatest cost imaginable—the very blood of Jesus, fully God and fully man (Acts 20:281 Peter 1:18-19). No human effort or treasure could ever purchase even one soul, but Christ gave Himself willingly. His love paid the price none of us could ever pay, sealing His people as His treasured possession for all eternity (Ephesians 1:14).

If you feel the weight of caring for others, remember this: Jesus, who laid down His life for the flock, is both your model and your constant companion. Lean into His strength and allow His sacrifice to motivate gentle diligence. The flock is His, and He never fails to shepherd both sheep and undershepherds, guiding them all safely home.
