John 8:58
“Truly, truly, I tell you,” Jesus declared, “before Abraham was born, I am! ”
When Jesus declared, “Before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:58), He wasn’t just making a bold claim about His importance in history—He was revealing His very nature. Some have misunderstood this, thinking Jesus meant He existed only in God’s plan or that He somehow anticipated Abraham only in purpose. But this misses the heart of what Jesus said. He wasn’t just chosen ahead of time the way all believers are (chosen “before the foundation of the world” (Ephesians 1:4)), nor was He referring to a symbolic “fatherhood” of Abraham that would include Gentiles later. Jesus was speaking about something far deeper: His divine, eternal being.
Jesus links Himself directly to the name God revealed to Moses at the burning bush: “I am that I am” (Exodus 3:14). By taking this name for Himself, Jesus claimed to be the same unchanging God—the One who has no beginning, no end, and remains constant throughout all the ages. Long before Abraham ever walked the earth, Christ existed, not as a mere figure in prophecy, but as the living God, active in creation (Colossians 1:16), the One through whom the covenant of grace was established (Hebrews 13:20).
This unchanging “I am” is no distant deity. He appeared in the world, walked with the patriarchs, and was always the hope and Redeemer for those who trusted God, even before they saw His face. The comfort for us is this: Jesus is steadfast, the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). His love, grace, and power never fade. When we trust Him, we place our hope in One who is always faithful—eternal, unshakable, and ever-present.
