John 17:17
Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.
In the garden, as Jesus prays for His disciples, He lifts this heartfelt request to the Father: “Sanctify them by the truth” (John 17:17). Here, Jesus is asking that His followers—those first apostles and every believer since—would be set apart for God’s purposes and shaped more and more by the truth. To be sanctified is not just a one-time event or a simple label; it’s both a setting apart for God’s work and a lifelong process of becoming more like Christ (1 Thessalonians 5:23).
Even though the disciples were chosen long before and had already been given their calling, Jesus knew they would need ongoing strength, a fresh calling, and deeper holiness for their mission. Our growth in faith starts as spiritual newborns and matures over time—from baby steps to the greater wisdom and strength of spiritual adults (1 John 2:12-14). Just as a seed pushes its way up to the sunlight and grows little by little, so does the life of sanctification grow in us. It’s God’s continual work—a steady hand shaping us, year after year—until He brings it to completion (Philippians 1:6).
Jesus reveals the means of this transformation: “Your word is truth.” The Scriptures are unique—they come straight from the God of truth, guided by the Spirit of truth, and point us wholly to Christ, who is Himself the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). The Gospel doesn’t just inform us; it changes us from within, fueling both the birth and the steady growth of holiness in God’s people.
When you feel the weight of slow progress or see your flaws more clearly, remember: your sanctification is in God’s strong, faithful hands, carried forward by His living Word and sealed in Christ. He hasn’t set you apart just to leave you on your own—He is daily finishing the good work He began.
