Luke-6-31

Luke 6:31

Do to others as you would have them do to you.

Picture yourself for a moment on the other side of every encounter—standing not as the one asking, demanding, or judging, but as the one being asked of or judged. Jesus places us right there when He says, “Just as you want others to do for you, do the same for them” (Luke 6:31). It’s simple, but in that simplicity lies deep wisdom—the kind that should shape how justice and kindness flow through our daily lives.

This principle, often called the Golden Rule, isn’t just a clever saying or a relic of ancient wisdom. It captures the very heart of what God has shown across the centuries. The standard Jesus gives is not based on how others have treated us, or even how society expects us to behave, but on how we ourselves would long to be treated were our positions reversed (Matthew 7:12). If we find ourselves seeking fairness, gentleness, or understanding, Jesus’ rule instructs us to be the first to offer these very things.

Far from being just practical advice or polite manners, this teaching is anchored in both human conscience and divine command. It pulls together all that the law and prophets intended—justice with mercy, duty with generosity (Romans 13:8-10). God, who sees every hidden motive, delights when we treat others as cherished image-bearers, remembering our shared frailty and worth.

Do not be discouraged if this feels daunting or if others fall short in return. The ruler of this upside-down kingdom calls us to act out of His own generous spirit, not merely in response to the world’s coldness or calculation (Ephesians 4:32). With every choice to serve, forgive, or bless, we grow a little nearer to His likeness, and the light of God’s love becomes more visible through us.
