If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. Indeed, none of you should suffer as a murderer or thief or wrongdoer, or even as a meddler. But if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but glorify God that you bear that name.

There’s a peculiar blessing that rests on believers who are insulted or mistreated because they claim Christ’s name (1 Peter 4:14). To the world, such reproach seems purely shameful, yet God calls His people happy—both now and forever—when their loyalty to Jesus brings scorn. The Spirit of glory, the very presence of God, rests on them, giving an inner joy and resilience even as others mock or misunderstand (Isaiah 11:2).

It is all too certain: if you belong to Christ—if you wear the name “Christian”—you will face misunderstanding, perhaps even ridicule or real loss (Acts 9:15). This suffering is not meaningless or wasted. It marks you as one who shares in Christ’s life, and the Holy Spirit supplies a comfort and honor which the world cannot see. Such suffering gives God glory, especially when you respond not with anger or shame, but with steady joy and dependence on the Spirit.

However, the apostle is clear: followers of Jesus must never confuse suffering for Christ with consequences for wrongdoing. There is no blessing in bearing the penalty for murder, theft, dishonesty, or meddling in others’ business (Genesis 9:6; Exodus 22:1). Only the suffering that comes from living openly and faithfully as a Christian is truly honorable. If you are insulted or excluded because you trust and follow Jesus, let there be no shame in it—only the joy of glorifying God, who has counted you worthy to bear Christ’s name (Acts 11:26).

God delights to give His people both the strength to stand up under reproach and the privilege of bringing honor to the name of Jesus. Stand firm, then, and rejoice that your faith is visible, your hope secure, and your suffering never wasted in God’s sight (Hebrews 12:2).
