The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

The book of Proverbs opens with a line more precious than gold: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7). This isn’t a trembling fear that shrinks away from God, afraid only of punishment or loss. Instead, it’s the respectful, loving awe a child feels for a good father—a heart that knows God’s grace, forgiveness, and steadfast love, and responds with trust and adoration (Psalm 130:4). This sort of fear is the true foundation for all understanding. It begins in the soul, but it shapes every part of life, touching both our quiet prayers and our everyday choices.

This heart posture is the doorway to real wisdom and learning. All other education or cleverness, if it doesn’t spring from knowing and honoring God, is missing the core truth. A person can have shelves full of books or sharp opinions on many subjects, but unless their knowledge is rooted here—in humble reverence before their Maker—it counts for little in the end (Job 28:28). The “fear of the Lord” plants a deep well of peace and direction within us, guiding how we worship and how we walk through daily challenges.

Yet the proverb draws a sharp contrast: fools laugh off wisdom and resist instruction. They dismiss God’s ways, turning their backs on the teaching that could heal and save (John 17:3). Such a person may scoff at Scripture and refuse Christ Himself, the one in whom all wisdom and life are found. The world calls stubbornness “independence,” but Proverbs labels it for what it truly is—folly and spiritual blindness.

Take heart, then, and let the fear of the Lord anchor your learning and daily living. Cherish every opportunity to know Him more, and trust that He delights to reveal Himself to those who seek Him with true reverence and childlike faith.
