For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
Jesus often called Himself “the Son of Man”—a humble yet mighty title echoing the Messianic hope woven through the Scriptures (Daniel 7:13; Matthew 26:64). He stepped down from heaven, not reluctantly, but purposefully—sent by the Father’s loving will, and choosing this rescue mission with full agreement and compassion (John 3:17).
His purpose is crystal clear: to seek and to save those who are lost (Luke 19:10). Lostness, in this sense, isn’t just a matter of wandering off the right path, but a deep spiritual need. Apart from God’s grace, every one of us is spiritually lost—a truth that traces all the way back to Adam, carried further by our own sinful choices (Romans 5:12). Zacchaeus, the tax collector in this story, was just one vivid example of what “lost” looks like, but he is also a living picture of hope; no case is too far gone for Christ’s seeking love.
Notice that Jesus doesn’t just wait for the lost to find their way home. He moves toward them. He looked for Zacchaeus—called him out by name, brought him down from his perch, entered his home, and changed his heart (Luke 19:5-6). Jesus is always the first mover in salvation, shining His light into the shadows of every life, pursuing with gentle and determined mercy.
Take heart, then—if you ever feel overlooked or unreachable, remember the kindness that led Zacchaeus home. Jesus is still seeking, still saving, still calling each of us by name. No one is beyond the reach of His searching grace, and no home is too humble for His presence.
