Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Jesus invites us to step back and consider where we’re sending our hearts. “Don’t store up treasures for yourselves on earth,” He warns, because earthly riches—fashions, food, gold—are always threatened by decay, loss, or theft (Matthew 6:19). In His day, people considered garments or grains as a form of wealth; today, it might be houses, stocks, or digital fortunes. No matter their form, these treasures are never truly secure, never able to guarantee our peace or purpose.

Yet Jesus points us to something far better: “Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:20). He isn’t calling us away from wise stewardship, but away from anxious, self-centered hoarding that clings to this world. Real heavenly treasure is secured not by hiding wealth, but by giving with open hands—sharing with those in need, acting with mercy, and investing in the work of God’s kingdom. Acts like these are treasures no thief can steal, no moth can ruin, and no rust can corrode (Luke 12:33; 1 Timothy 6:18–19).

“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). This simple phrase probes deep: what do we prize, and where is our hope anchored? Earthly wealth captures our worries and affections, but storing treasure with God frees our hearts to love Him and look to eternity with confidence. When we give generously and cling lightly to what we have, our souls find their true home—not in passing comforts, but in the unshakable joy of knowing Christ and participating in His eternal kingdom (Colossians 3:1–2).

So hold your earthly gifts loosely, and invest your life where nothing is ever lost. Let your heart journey upward, steady and glad, whenever you trust God with your treasure.
