Romans 8:18

Romans 8:18

I consider that our present sufferings are not comparable to the glory that will be revealed in us.

There is a certain clarity and hope that settles in when we pause to take account of our present struggles from a heavenly perspective. When Scripture refers to “this present time,” it’s not just speaking of one harsh era or a particularly troubled age in history; rather, it captures the whole experience of life in this world, from the first breath to the last (Romans 8:18). Here, the days of the saints are marked by trials—sometimes sharp, sometimes lingering—yet always under God’s wise and watchful care. Life on earth comes with a mix of hardships because of our broken bodies, a world marked by decay, and the reality of spiritual enemies who oppose all that is good (2 Corinthians 4:17Ephesians 6:12).

But, like travelers at night looking forward to dawn, we remember these sufferings are temporary—a short season compared to the unending joy ahead (1 Peter 1:6). As soon as God’s children are called home, pain and sin cannot touch them anymore. No more doubts, no more fears; only peace, delight, and the presence of Christ himself (Revelation 21:4). Even our bodies, which now ache and weaken, will one day reflect the very glory of our risen Lord.

The future God promises is described as “glory”—a word that only barely hints at its brilliance. What we find dazzling on earth is but a faint shadow compared to what’s reserved for those who love Christ (Colossians 3:4). This glory isn’t just something seen with our eyes; it will fill us, transforming our very hearts and minds with knowledge and holiness. No calculation can set the sorrows of now side by side with the splendor of then. Our hardship is momentary and light; the glory awaiting us is eternal and weighty beyond words (2 Corinthians 4:17).

Take heart, then, as you press on. Even the sharpest trials are temporary, but the joy of Christ lasts forever. As you weigh life’s challenges, remember: after all has been summed up, eternal glory always tips the scales.
