1 Corinthians 13:4

1 Corinthians 13:4

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

Picture for a moment the kind of love that shows up not just in pleasant times, but when patience is pressed and kindness is put to the test (1 Corinthians 13:4). This isn’t a fleeting emotion or a mere ideal—it’s enduring and practical, working itself out in a believer’s life. Love, here, acts as a steadfast companion; it doesn’t give up easily or fly into anger when wronged. Instead, it gently bears with others in difficult circumstances, reflecting the patience Christ showed in His own suffering (Colossians 3:12–13), and remains forgiving rather than vengeful (Ephesians 4:32).

Alongside patience, love is generous—always looking for an opportunity to serve and bless, even when there’s nothing to gain in return. It is considerate and easy to approach, not cold or standoffish. This kind of love adapts to meet people where they are, offering understanding rather than hard demands, as long as doing so doesn’t compromise what is right and pleasing to God (Philippians 2:3–4).

True love also guards the heart from envy. It delights in God’s goodness to others, trusting that God’s hand is just as gentle in our own lives, even if His gifts look different (Romans 12:15). This love doesn’t compare or grow resentful—it doesn’t begrudge a brother or sister their gifts, fruitfulness, or moments of success. Remember Moses’ gladness at the blessing of others (Numbers 11:29), or John the Baptist’s humble joy at Jesus’ rising ministry (John 3:29–30).

Lastly, love doesn’t parade itself or inflate its own importance. It does not boast, rush headlong to claim the spotlight, nor stir up unrest for its own sake. The loving heart seeks God’s glory first, not its own applause—staying grounded and gentle, anchored in humility and grace (1 Corinthians 8:1).

Let these qualities be your aim, even in small, daily moments. Love like this may not always come easily, but by God’s Spirit it becomes both our model and comfort.
